The Schutt ION 4D Youth Football Helmet delivers the same impeccable protection, comfort, and playability as its big brother, the varsity ION 4D, but in a shell design fit for youth football players. Filled with the advanced TPU cushioning system that cradles your head in impact-absorbing, temperature-regulating, and anti-microbial comfort and protection, the ION 4D never quits, breaks down, or stops keeping you safe, even after seasons of use. Its large off-set shell creates a larger, more aggressive profile while putting more room between the shell and your skull. This larger off-set also allows room for more of the injury-preventing TPU cushioning, giving you the most amount of impact-absorbing safety possible.
*This graph demonstrates the amount of impact force a player's head experiences while wearing the helmet. Helmets are subject to a pass/fail certification testing by NOCSAE, conducted at room temperature, and temperatures above 100 degrees, to simulate in-game conditions. *Product Update: Schutt has recently made a slight change to the ION 4D. Sizes Small through Large no longer include the Quarter Turn Release facemask attachment. These helmets include standard screws and posts with a new one-piece nose bumper. Size XL still comes with Quarter Turn Release. Sports Unlimited still has Quarter Turn Release helmets in inventory and for the time being, cannot guarantee which style will ship. nice helmet, July 2, 2011Great helmet. We needed to order the adult large for my 13 year old son (5'7 & 120lbs) He usually wears a Medium but it was way too tight. We went with the large and inflated the linerfor a goo fit. The vision of the mask makes a huge difference and gives an edge.
Why not?, August 21, 2011After my son was given an entry level helmet by his league I thought "Why would I not buy him the best helmet available" After researching I thought the Ion gave the best protection. Cost wise I don't think paying $200+ for the protection of my 12 year old sons head is an issue. He likes the helmet and he really liked the wide array of facemask choices.

Youth Ion, September 6, 2010After one half of a practice my 13 year old was ready to toss this helmet. I even went to get his old helmet, but he "suffered" through the rest of practice. After practice he showed me that the problem was the padding on the centerline at the base of the skull. There is actually quite a bit of TPU padding back there, but it doesn't compress much for comfort. He tried his old helmet, but quickly realized the superiority of the Ion. He hasn't complained since, but I'm guessing that it could be a little more comfortable.
The Beast needed the safest helmet, October 22, 2010I just received my 11 year old sons Ion4D Youth Helmet, he is one of the heavy hitters on the team & I wanted to get him the safest helmet after cracking his DNA, I purchased the Xenith first & thought it was nice but he complained about the top padding & the sad face look that helmet gives him, the Xenith was stolen with the rest of my coaching equip. so I went with the ION4D, he seems excited really hyped with this one..

great helmet, too heavy, August 9, 2011Got this helmet for my 11 year old son last season. He said the the helmet was very comfortable overall but hurt his neck due to the weight. This helmet is almost twice the weight of other helmets and will slow smaller players down. I would definitely recommend this helmet for high school and above.
Review of helmet purchase, June 21, 2010
Schutt Youth Ion 4D, September 13, 2010Comfort and protection-wise, this is a tremendous helmet. Problem is that it is very heavy for most youth players. My son is 8, and he couldn't support the weight of it. I let my 11 year old try it out, with the same result. We exchanged it for the Schutt Youth XP, which is much more acceptable weight-wise while still being a safety/venting upgrade from the standard youth Air model.
