Design and Construction

The VICIS Zero2 takes a modern, engineered approach with a deformable outer shell designed to absorb impact like a car bumper. Its structure prioritizes innovation and advanced materials. The Schutt Vengeance Pro LTD II maintains a more traditional football helmet design with a mohawk-style, low-profile shell. Both use durable polycarbonate for the shell, with VICIS focusing on an unconventional form and Schutt emphasizing refinement of proven structural elements.

Impact Protection Technology

VICIS uses a five-layer protection system, including its RFLX 2.0 column structure that flexes and buckles to disperse energy. The outer shell also compresses to absorb force. Schutt integrates single-layer TPU cushioning, combined with a molded EVA frontal pad and Helmet Stabilization System (HSS) to secure the head and reduce movement during impact. Each helmet offers a different approach to mitigating force: VICIS through deformation and layered components, and Schutt through traditional cushioning and stabilization features.

Fit and Comfort

Fit customization is achieved differently. The VICIS Zero2 features the DLTA pod system with interchangeable pods that snap into six interior points, allowing for highly adjustable sizing without inflation. Schutt’s Vengeance Pro LTD II uses Surefit lateral air liners, velcro-secured jaw pads, and a non-inflatable crown liner, offering a straightforward and secure fit. Both helmets provide comfort and stability, though the mechanisms for achieving a proper fit vary in complexity and adjustability.

Facemask and Chinstrap

Both helmets include a chinstrap and offer facemask compatibility, though the configurations differ. The Zero2 includes a tubular stainless steel facemask and a SportStar Extra Deep Hard Cup chinstrap, with the facemask hard-mounted for stability. The Vengeance Pro LTD II comes with a soft cup chinstrap and uses a twist-release nose bumper for easier facemask changes, though the facemask itself is sold separately. Each offers ease of use and reliable attachment systems tailored to their respective designs.

Weight and Feel

VICIS designed the Zero2 to be 15% lighter than its predecessor, with attention to balance and streamlined structure. While exact weight may vary by configuration, it’s designed to reduce bulk while maintaining protection. The Schutt Vengeance Pro LTD II weighs approximately 2.65 lbs, making it one of the lighter traditional helmets available. Both aim to reduce fatigue during play, with weight savings achieved through different materials and design philosophies.

Safety Ratings and Maintenance

Both helmets hold a 5-star rating from Virginia Tech, reflecting top-tier safety performance. The Zero2’s fit system doesn’t rely on air or pumps, which reduces maintenance and simplifies adjustment. Similarly, the Vengeance Pro LTD II features non-inflatable components, also minimizing upkeep. Neither helmet requires specialized tools for routine maintenance, and both are built with long-term performance in mind.
