Design and Construction
Both the Riddell SpeedFlex Youth and Schutt F7 LX1 Youth helmets are designed with performance and protection in mind, tailored for younger athletes. The SpeedFlex features an ABS plastic shell with a distinctive flex panel on the crown that helps reduce impact forces. The F7 LX1 uses a polycarbonate shell and retains the signature Tektonic Plate technology from the adult model, allowing multi-directional movement for improved rotational force management. While the SpeedFlex emphasizes flexibility through its shell and facemask, the F7 LX1 focuses on layered structure and shell rigidity.
Impact Protection Technology
Each helmet incorporates multi-layered protection systems, but with different technologies. The SpeedFlex uses Riddell’s patented Side Impact Protection (PISP), a Flex System in the shell and facemask, and a composite energy management system to reduce impact forces. The F7 LX1 features a five-layer energy dispersion system, including Tektonic Plates, a VTD front pad, and a SureFit Air Liner with enhanced pod structure for better rotational and linear impact management. Both helmets aim to address different impact angles and force levels using proprietary technology.
Fit and Comfort
Custom fit options are a strong focus for both models. The SpeedFlex includes an inflatable liner and jaw pads, with four inflation points for targeted adjustments. It also uses a Cam-Loc chinstrap system for easy fit changes. The F7 LX1 provides a tailored fit through a SureFit Air Liner and HSS jaw pads, although it has fewer inflatable components than the adult F7 model. The SpeedFlex emphasizes adjustability via inflation, while the F7 LX1 opts for structured internal components to shape comfort.
Facemask and Chinstrap
Both helmets are compatible with their respective facemask lines and come with a soft cup chinstrap. The SpeedFlex includes a ratchet-loc chinstrap system and uses a high-strength HS4 facemask (sold separately), mounted with an all-points quick release system. The F7 LX1 uses loop strap attachments for facemask installation and is compatible with all F7 faceguards. Each helmet’s chinstrap and facemask setup is optimized for youth use and safety, with ease of use and security in mind.
Weight and Feel
Despite advanced protection, both helmets maintain a youth-appropriate weight. The SpeedFlex weighs approximately 3.1 lbs, while the F7 LX1 is slightly heavier at around 3.15 lbs. However, Schutt reduced weight by removing certain features found in the adult model, like the nose bumper and internal cheek stabilizers. Both provide a balanced feel on the field while integrating robust safety features.
Safety Ratings and Maintenance
While specific Virginia Tech ratings for youth helmets can vary, both models are derived from 5-star adult counterparts known for excellent safety. Maintenance differs slightly: the SpeedFlex requires proper inflation tools and care to avoid liner damage, while the F7 LX1 uses fewer inflatable components, reducing maintenance needs. Both helmets are built for durability and long-term performance, offering solid protection with youth-specific considerations.
